Create mind map assignments following the steps from this section. Learn how to introduce group work to students and then use the following exercises to teach them how to learn collaboratively. You can also create other exercises that you think would fit well with the lessons you teach in class.
Exercise 1:
Ask every team to create mind maps where they conjugate the verbs selected by the teacher in different tenses.
Each student should have a minimum of 3 verbs conjugated in different tenses.
They can use this template to learn more about English tenses and complete directly with the conjugated form of the verbs. They can create more mind maps and conjugate each verb on a different map.
Exercise 2:
Ask every team to create a mind map about their summer break. Their mind map should contain:
- At least 3 activities for each member of the team
- A short description of each activity
They can work together in groups and add their ideas on the same map, as in the example below. In this way, they will learn how to use action verbs and will exercise verb conjugation. Adding their ideas on the same map will help them collaborate easier.
Instead of writing an essay called "My summer break", you can ask students to complete this template with activities from their summer break, places they have visited, and people they have spent time with.
Exercise 3:
Give students a verb and ask them to work collaboratively and find collocations with that verb.
See the example below with Collocations with "break":
Exercise 4:
Ask students to write sentences with the different meanings of a phrasal verb.
They can complete this template with the phrasal verb "to get".
Exercise 5:
Ask students to create sentences with different types of verbs.
When you create the assignment you can choose this template so they use it as a starting point.
Exercise 6:
Ask students to write phrases with all the types of pronouns in English.
They can build their maps directly from this template:
Exercise 7:
Ask groups to study the different types of adverbs. Then they can complete this template with phrases where they will use the learned adverbs.
Exercise 8:
Ask students to learn the linking words examples from this mind map template and the appropriate contexts when they are used. Then students can collaborate and think about phrases with each linking word.
Exercise 9:
Ask groups to find multiple meaning words and specify their meanings. Then they should create sentences that highlight those meanings.
Exercise 10:
Ask groups to find new words by using the prefixes and suffixes in English for each word from this template and create new words.
